Youth and Family 2006 Conference

“In my almost 40 years in the legal profession, I have never experienced anything on the scale of the Youth and Family 2006 Conference. It was not just the numbers of people who were there or the range of countries from which they came that impressed me. The status, the skill and the professional dedication of the speakers also contributed to what must have been the most successful conference of it type to have ever taken place.

But these things don’t just happen. It was apparent from the very start of my interest in attending, that a remarkable team of organisers were involved. It is not patronising, it is a statement of fact, that you and your colleagues produced a world class event with a level of efficiency and professionalism that could not be challenged. The test of this is the absence of any overt crisis or “loss of cool” in the running of the conference itself. I have no idea how many assistants you had (it seemed like thousands), but each one to whom I spoke was calm, polite, efficient and courteous in an environment where I would have been, at best, flustered and, at worst, hysterical.

The City of Belfast itself could not have been more welcoming. Every person with whom we came into contact, taxi drivers, museum staff, shop assistants and the many people in the street from whom we sought directions, was warm, friendly and very helpful.

If I was asked to pick one highlight, I have to confess that the boost to my ego of having Sandra Day O’Connor attend my session on the Menace of the Internet is something from which I hope never to recover. In the letter I have written to My Justice Gillen, I have commented on the nerve racking thrill of seeing probably the greatest American Jurist in history sitting a couple of metres from me listening to my presentation.

I trust you had the chance to enjoy the glass of champagne after the close of proceedings, you certainly deserved it.
