In the space which is currently derelict behind St. Anne’s Cathedral a new arts centre – OMAC[2] – is being brought to life by the Old Museum Arts Centre. After lobbying for more than a decade to bring a new purpose built theatre to Belfast OMAC[2] was given the go-ahead earlier this year, receiving nearly £10m from various sources. A further £1m still needs to be raised but design will be finalised by the end of next year, with building scheduled to start in mid-2008 and the venue due to open by 2010. It will be somewhat removed from OMAC’s existing 160 year old theatre in College Square North which sits 90. OMAC[2] will be part of St Anne’s Square, a new build development that will also have shops, apartments, a hotel and a multi-storey car park. The venue itself will have two theatres, seating 120 and 350. There will be studios, rehearsal rooms, a café, bar and foyer area.
