Belfast’s newest hotel, The Merchant is to treble in size with building expected to start on a new £7m expansion next year. Plans will be submitted for another 49 rooms, a spa, function suite, meeting rooms and seven serviced apartments. Owner Bill Wolsey said he hopes ‘phase two’ of The Merchant will be completed within two years. Phase two of The Merchant will look very different to the existing hotel, from the outside at least. The plans are to demolish existing and derelict buildings attached to the present Merchant leading on to High Street and Skipper Street. The top floor apartments, boasting panoramic views of the city, will be another first for Belfast. They will be leased for periods of a month or more. Mr Wolsey said the first has already been taken for a year.
